Aircraft windows, such as those used in aircraft cockpits, are frequently provided with a built-in vision device. Examples of such vision devices include goggle or shutter type devices. In a goggle type device, a viewing pane is attached to a panel or window. When the vision device is used, the viewing pane is separated from the panel or window. When the vision device is not used, the viewing pane is sealed to the panel or window.
A shutter type vision device includes a viewing pane that is separate from and sealed to a shutter panel. To open the shutter, a user pivots the viewing pane away from the shutter panel and against the sealing means. When the shutter is open, the user is free to see out the viewing pane. When the shutter is closed, the user seals the viewing pane to the shutter panel to protect the viewing pane.
Often, the viewing pane includes a plurality of glass plates that are bonded together using a rigid adhesive. The viewing pane is typically made of a flexible material, such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and fluoropolymers. A rigid adhesive can be used to hold the plurality of glass plates together. An example of a rigid adhesive is an adhesive that is sold by 3M Company under the trademark GEL.
